The Norvel AME-061 represented another AME-049 development branch that ran parallel to the now defunct Stels engines but, unlike them, was well regarded as an entry level F1J engine. The Norvel AME-061 was a bored out version of the Norvel AME-049 and had many parts in common. It was a plain bearing engine using AAN (aluminium, aluminium, nickel) cylinder technology and a special button plug. With their low cost they provided a useful entry path to the American Junior Team F1J/F1P program.
These were light engines that could be competitive in F1J on light models. Gil Morris was using the AME 061 in his POP-UP design, where it was a consistent winner.
October 2009: Norvel appear to be out of business. Their website is now a link farm operated by Tucows. Engines and parts are no longer stocked by SIG.
